The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has attributed the rising insecurity bedeviling the country to the weakness of Nigeria’s education system.
Lawan listed rising criminal activities, anti-social behavior, insecurity, high number of youth unemployment, and an unproductive workforce as some of the results of the country’s weak education sector.

He disclosed this at the 8th Matriculation Ceremony Of Postgraduate students of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS)/University of Benin (UNIBEN) held on Monday at the National Assembly, Abuja
The Senate President added that the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly had amended the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act to ensure that the 2% budgetary allocation to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) by the Federal Government was increased to 3%.
“However, not much have been done to ensure that stakeholders at the state and federal levels do their part to strengthen the sector,”
He also commended NILDS for its support in the development of vibrant, effective, and accountable legislatures and democratic institutions in Nigeria.
According to him, this has strengthened democracy, democratization, and democratic ethics in the country.
Lawan charged the 123 new sets of candidates matriculating into the various postgraduate programmes of the institute to make maximum use of the opportunity to develop their capacities in the various organ of the legislature.
On his part, NILDS Director-General, Professor Suleiman Abubakar, charged the matriculating students to abide by the rules and regulations of the institute as contained in their oath of matriculation.
This he said will enable them to build a strong and virile bureaucracy that will address the skill gaps in all aspects of legislative operations
