Anambra

Less than twenty-four hours to Anambra Governorship Election and despite the cancellation of Sit-at-home order by sessessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), major roads and streets of Awka, the Anambra State capital wear a deserted look on Friday.

The state capital looks a shadow of itself with very few commercial activities and vehichular movement as residents make last minute preparation for Saturday’s Governorship elections.

Even when IPOB Spokesperson, Emma Powerful late Thursday announced that the group was calling off the civil disobedience following interventions and appeals by several notable Igbo persons and groups; the popular Unizik Junction along the Enugu – Onitsha expressway, looks desolate with many shops and the motor parks closed.

Only a few commercial tricycles could be seen picking up stranded passengers.

Too afraid to speak on camera, many said they are not aware IPOB has called off its earlier threat to shut down the South East region for one week to protest the continued detention of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu who is currently in the custody of the DSS.

It is unclear what impact the current development in the State may have on the voters’ turn out in Saturday’s Governorship election with more than 30, 000 policemen and other security operatives at red alert.
