Implication of Shutdown of Primary Healthcare, Schools in FCT

It may no longer be news rhat Primary schools, Primary Healthcare centers and other government institutions under the Area Council administration have been shut down for over one month in the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory.
‎
‎This is as a result of the indefinite joint strike embarked upon by the Nigerian Union of Teachers and the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees over non payment of salaries and other Basic allowances.
‎
‎The Area Council workers in the Federal Capital Territory have embarked on three warning strikes between November 2024 and February 2025 over non payment of salaries as approved by the national minimum wage and other basic allowances by the executive chairmen of the six area councils.
‎
The situation got worse since March 2025 following allegation of non compliance with the agreement signed with the area council chairmen.

Recently, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike said the industrial action by area council workers will be resolved by deducting ten percent of the Internally generated revenue from the allocation for the six area councils.

‎For the six area councils chairmen, it is time to appeal to the workers to return to their duty posts to enable them explore other options for peaceful resolutions.
‎
Already, the chairman Abuja Municipal Area Council Christopher Maikalangu had announced the approval of seventy thousand naira minimum wage for his area council workers, a decision that has been adopted by other council chairmen in the Federal Capital Territory.
