The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has attributed irresponsible use of social media and impersonation of the military by some bad elements as key enablers of insecurity in the country that must be put to check.

The Army Chief said this in Kano, during the 41st Nigerian Army Social Media Seminar with the theme, “Promoting a Culture of Security Awareness Through the Responsible Use of Social Media”.

The seminar is part of a Civil Military Relations programme organised by the Army headquarter, Abuja, aimed at encouraging the responsible use of the social media for profitable ventures, and targeting online bloggers, social media influencers, content creators, security personnel and other key players.

Represented by the Dean, Faculty of Combat Arms Research, Nigeria Army Heritage and Future Center, Abuja, Major General B.S Ahmed, the Chief of Army Staff told his audience that the negative use of social media has caused serious security breaches in Nigeria.

Another enabler of insecurity in Nigeria, the Army observed, is the growing trend of impersonation of the Military by criminal elements

Experts say that the over all objectives of the 41st edition of the Nigerian Army’s Social Media seminar, is to educate the youthful population on the need to remain supportive of the military, through the use of social media contents that promotes unity and patriotism.
