The Edo State Government joined the global community in commemorating the 2025 World Hypertension Day by conducting free medical checks and health sensitization activities across the three senatorial districts.

The initiative was aimed at raising awareness about hypertension and promoting preventive health practices.

World hypertension day is observed annually on May 17 to emphasize the importance of regular health screenings for the early detection and management of high blood pressure.

To mark the day, the Edo State Government, through the State’s Health Insurance Commission organized events that included free blood pressure checks, Body Mass Index assessments, health education talks, and general medical counseling. These activities were held simultaneously in Edo North, Edo Central, and Edo South Senatorial Districts, delivering a unified message on hypertension prevention.

Key preventive measures emphasized during the outreach included Regular physical activity, Stress management, Reduced intake of salt and alcohol, and Routine blood pressure monitoring

Dr. Omorogbe Owen-Stephen, Head of Planning, Research, and Statistics at the Edo Health Insurance Commission, stated that with the rising number of Nigerians living with hypertension, the outreach was essential in encouraging healthier lifestyles.

He stressed the need for stress reduction, sufficient rest, and a balanced diet.

The theme for this year’s World Hypertension Day is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”.
