Gov Diri Warns Students Against Cultism In Niger Delta University

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa state has given stern warning to students engaged in cult activities at the state-owned Niger Delta University (NDU), to withdraw from the institution or be ready for expulsion.

The Bayelsa governor who gave the warning during the NDU 7th Combined Convocation ceremony, following recent incidents of students cult rivalries also performed the groundbreaking of a 5,000 capacity Convocation Arena and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building with six laboratories.

A gathering of academia, political elites and alumni at the Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma set the stage for the 7th Combined convocation ceremony of 6,536 graduands.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Allen Agih says a breakdown of the graduands include, 5,726 for Bachelor’s degrees with 69 First Class honours, 810 higher degrees graduands, including 16 professional diplomas, 191 post- graduate diplomas, 458 Master’s degrees and 145 Doctors of Philosophy .

Professor Agih noted that the institution has evolved and become the melting pot of ideas and initiatives, and that the institution was working towards mitigating the problem of climate change and economic diversification.

Visitor of the University and Governor of Bayelsa state, Senator Douye Diri expressed worries over the rising cases of cult related activities, with reported cases of deaths in the student community

As part of his administration’s commitment in fostering an environment conducive for academic excellence, Governor Diri flagged off the construction of a 5,000 capacity convocation arena and the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building.
