The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has begun a flood risk management engagement with flashpoint communities and relevant stakeholders in Benue State, to mitigate the impact of anticipated floods during the 2025 rainy season.

The Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar while speaking at the stakeholders forum in Makurdi, said the Agency would also kick-start National Preparedness and Response Campaign (NPRC) in the State.

Records show that yearly, parts of Benue State in the North central region of Nigeria experience flooding, due to a number of factors which have made this annual recurrence almost inevitable, but early preparedness, according to officials of NEMA could mitigate the risks.

It is in this regard that the stakeholders’ engagement took off in Makurdi, the capital city at the instance of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The Agency said it has equally developed disaster mitigation strategies, including capacity building of local emergency responders, simulation exercises as well as rainwater harvesting.
