Civil Society Organisations are calling for an end to period poverty and the stigma surrounding menstruation, saying this will ensure that education is not disrupted by lack of access to essential hygiene products.

The group at a conference in Lagos to mark the 2025 International Menstrual Hygiene Day discussed critical issues surrounding menstrual hygiene.

Many young girls have had to make hard decisions during their period due to paucity of funds.

This stark reality of period poverty, and the need for immediate action by governments at all levels to address the challenge formed the thrust of discussions at the one day conference.

Other key demands by participants include the removal of taxes on sanitary pads to make them more accessible and affordable and the provision of free sanitary materials for schoolgirls even as the students were equipped with mestrual hygiene techniques.

Participants in the event with the theme: “Together for a Period-Friendly World” believe that access to sanitary products is not just a matter of convenience but a fundamental step towards ensuring girls’ right to education and overall well-being.
