POVERTY ALLEVIATION

It was smiles all round at the Jabi community of the Federal Capital Territory as an intensive two week empowerment campaign for residents was rounded off.

Children as young as four, five, and seven years old demonstrated remarkable learning abilities in skills such as sewing, tailoring, and hair braiding soap making and cake baking acquired during the fourteen day period.
The programme which focuses primarily on poverty alleviation saw scores of residents of all ages benefit from the training.

The coordinator of the programme Doctor Regina Duru said it was heartwarming to see the eagerness and seriousness with which the participants treated the exercise, adding that more of such programmes should be introduced at both private and public levels.

Doctor Duru said this will contribute immensely to reducing the number of street urchins, create jobs, reduce crime and bring about an economically empowed and more prosperous Nigerian Society.

She expressed deep appreciation to the community leaders and other individuals, groups and organizations who contributed to making the programme a success and called on the beneficiaries to not only put the skills acquired to productive use, but also share the knowledge gained with others.

Chief of the Jabi Community, Dikko Danjuma, thanked the Regy and Henry foundation for considering his domain for the project and promised that there will be no regrets.

The event also featured an exhibition of the various skills acquired by the trainees during the two-week training and the cutting of a cake to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of the coordinator which was designed to coincide with the end of the programme.
