The Nigerian government has been urged to go beyond just subsidizing the high cost of livestock feeds but also to train farmers on innovative and cost-effective techniques.

The appeal came to the fore at a workshop organized in Akure, the Ondo State capital, to educate farmers on the production and use of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as alternative livestock feed.

The Ondo State Government, in collaboration with agricultural experts, is introducing farmers across the state’s three senatorial districts to the use of Black Soldier Fly Larvae, which is considered cost-effective and hygienic alternative for poultry, aquaculture, and pet feeds.

Farmers at the workshop acknowledged the benefits of adopting BSFL, expressing hope that this alternate feed will significantly reduce the sector’s reliance on imported feed ingredients.

With continuous support and education, stakeholders believe that innovations like BSFL could mark a turning point in ensuring sustainability and profitability in Nigeria’s livestock industry.
