The Wife of Nigeria’s President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was in Enugu State on Monday, to empower midwives across the Southeast with essential medical kits.

The event, held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu State’s capital, brought together stakeholders from across the region including over eleven wives of State governors.

Across the country, many healthcare workers are doing the best they can with very little.

With more than half of Nigeria’s health facilities lacking basic supplies, and only one doctor available for every 5,000 patients, the need for support has become urgent.

It is a sector still battling with high maternal deaths and a steady migration of trained professionals – leaving in search of better opportunities.

To help close the gap, the First Lady, through her Renewed Hope Initiative, has been visiting all six geopolitical zones, distributing professional medical kits to those on the frontlines of care.

In Enugu, she completed the final leg of that journey, handing out 10,000 scrubs and 10,000 pairs of crocs, to midwives and nurses from the five States of the Southeast.

According to the First Lady, the gesture was made possible through the anonymous support of a global partner committed to improving healthcare for Nigerians.

Welcoming the initiative, Governor Peter Mbah and his wife, Nkechinyere, described it as a timely intervention that aligns with Enugu’s vision to strengthen its healthcare system and better serve its communities.

In addition to supporting healthcare workers, Senator Tinubu also announced a ₦50 million business grant for 1,000 petty traders in Enugu , aimed at helping them revive and grow their small businesses.
