National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, wants the Nigerian government to take urgent steps to prevent and mitigate the devastating impact of fuel tanker accidents across the country.

NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, who made the call at a public awareness programme held in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, said too many lives have been lost due to recurring tanker explosions, and it is time for stronger awareness and action.

Fuel tanker accidents have become recurring realities in Nigeria, causing fatalities, property destruction, and environmental damage.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says the ongoing nationwide public awareness campaign is targeted at reducing the risks and consequences of tanker-related disasters.

While condemning the dangerous practice of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, the NEMA DG stressed the urgent need for better prevention, preparedness, and response systems nationwide.

Stakeholders at the event shared insights on legislation, road safety enforcement, and community engagement to prevent further tragedies.

The highpoint of the programme was a live demonstration on safety measures during tanker incidents, including first response techniques and evacuation procedures.

With fuel tanker accidents continuing to threaten lives and livelihoods, NEMA says collaboration and public awareness are crucial in building a more disaster-resilient Nigeria.

The event in Lokoja brought together key stakeholders, including emergency responders, transport authorities, and community leaders, all working toward a common goal.
