The 2027 general elections may still be years away, but the political landscape in Edo State is already shifting. The ruling All Progressives Congress APC. continues to gain momentum, with more defections from the opposition People’s Democratic Party PDP.
The latest wave includes former PDP governorship aspirant, Anselm Ojezua, alongside other prominent party leaders in Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area.
While receiving the defectors in Irrua, Esan central local government area, Governor Monday Okpebholo described the development as a clear indication that the PDP is losing ground in the area.
The defection trend, which has seen several PDP and Labour Party members joining the APC across Edo State, appears to be consolidating the ruling party’s grip on power.

This latest round of defections has now reached the governor’s home base, Esan Central local government area where high-profile figures such as former governorship aspirant of the PDP Anselm Ojezua, House of Assembly member representing the governor’s constituency, ex-local government chairmen, councillors, and notable PDP leaders have officially defected to the APC.
Governor Okpebholo, while receiving the newcomers, expressed appreciation to the defectors, noting their return to the APC as a significant boost to the party’s strength ahead of future elections.
Supporters of the defectors were seen carrying a mock casket with inscriptions suggesting the demise of the main opposition party in the state.
