Bauchi State Shari’a Law Enforcement Agency, known as Hisbah, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of marriage breakups in the state.

In response, the commission has set sixteen pre-wedding and celebration guidelines, aimed at addressing the trend, and curbing related social vices.

The announcement was made during a press briefing held by the chairman of the commission, Professor Hamisu Ya’u, and Aminu Isa, Permanent Commissioner of Hisba.

According to the commission, the decision follows a significant rise in the cases of divorce, many of which are being handled daily by Shari’a Commission.

The new measures are described as necessary, to safeguard the sanctity of marriage, and uphold moral values in society.

Among the sixteen new guidelines are bans on cultural and traditional practices, such as Kauyawa Day, the use of DJs, gala events, Aloba, and any form of entertainment perceived to promote immorality.

The guidelines are to be strictly enforced in recreational centers, clubs, and other venues, in accordance with the Bauchi State Shari’a Penal Code Sections 95, 362 and 373.

The commission further disclosed that instead of organizing mass weddings for divorcees, the Bauchi State Government has trained over 500 women, many of whom were previously involved in commercial sex work, in various trades and entrepreneurial skills to make them self-reliant.

Hisbah has called on members of the public to comply fully with the new guidelines.

The commission has also confirmed that its operatives across the state are prepared for immediate enforcement.
