A prominent Nigerian politician and Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial Zone, Godiya Akwashiki, is dead.
Akwashiki died at the age of 52 on Wednesday night after a prolonged illness while receiving treatment in a hospital in India.
Former Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Balarabe, confirmed the death in a statement issued in Lafia. He disclosed that the late senator had been ill for some time and was taken abroad for medical treatment before his passing.
Balarabe described Akwashiki’s death as a great loss to Eggon land, Nasarawa State, and the country at large, noting that the late lawmaker contributed significantly to democratic governance and legislative development.

Senator Akwashiki was born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah village, in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
He was first elected into the Senate in the 2019 general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC and was re-elected in 2023 on the ticket of the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
Before his election to the Senate, Akwashiki served as Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
His death has continued to draw tributes from political leaders, associates, and constituents across the state and beyond.
