Food prices will continue to crash until stability occurs, as Federal Government pledges to sustain trend by addressing high input costs to ensure food remains accessible and affordable.
This is according to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, who outlined efforts being made by government to create a conducive environment for agribusinesses to flourish nationwide, at the 2026 ministerial stakeholders engagement retreat on Agriculture transformation in Abuja.
According to the Minister, the challenges faced by smallholder farmers are enormous and government, has developed short-term plans to make farm inputs more accessible and affordable.
Kyari further revealed that the government has distributed 40 million cocoa seedlings to revitalize the country’s cocoa industry, release 65 improved crop varieties with enhanced yields, climate resilience, and nutritional profiles that are ideal for smallholder farmers and farmers who produce for commercial purposes.
The move is coming on the heels of calls for urgent government intervention and the need to ensure equilibrium prices that are fair for the consumer but profitable enough to keep the farmer in business.
The 2026 ministerial stakeholders engagement retreat on Agriculture transformation is therefore a key step towards creating a structured approach for stakeholders engagement, ensuring, that government activities in the agriculture sector are transparent, well-communicated and informed by stakeholder feedback.
