The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has dismissed reports alleging that suspect, Asar Michael Sesugh, died in its custody.

In a statement, the Commission said Sesugh was among twenty-six suspected cybercrime suspects arrested in Makurdi on April 28, 2026.

According to the EFCC, Sesugh and two other suspects escaped from detention on May 4 after allegedly breaking through the roof of a toilet facility at the Commission’s holding centre.

The Commission stated that intelligence later traced Sesugh to the Kanshio area of Makurdi on May 21, where operatives reportedly came under gunfire from him and suspected cult members, leading to an exchange of fire.

The EFCC said Sesugh was later found injured by the roadside and taken to the Police Cottage Hospital in Makurdi, where he was confirmed dead.

The Commission added that the incident had been reported to the Benue State Police Command, which has commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

While expressing condolences to the family of the deceased, the EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its personnel and carrying out its mandate in accordance with the law.
