Joint implementation project of the World Bank, United Nations Children’s Fund, Unicef, Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC has commenced in Benue State, North-Central Nigeria.

It is the 2026 National Learning Assessment Week to train assessors for credible data collection and improvement of learning outcomes across the education sector.

The maiden national learning assessment week, introduced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, officially opens here at the headquarters of the Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB.

The initiative is Nigeria’s first comprehensive nationwide assessment of learning outcomes across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The exercise begins with an intensive training designed to equip reviewers with the skills required for accurate and transparent data collection.

Speaking during the training, the Executive Chairman of Benue SUBEB, Dr. Grace Adagba, described the assessment as a strategic initiative that will provide reliable information on learners’ performance and support efforts to improve the quality of education delivery across the country.

Declaring the exercise open the National Learning Assessment Team Lead from UBEC Headquarters, Phoebe Jatau, explained that the assessment harmonises the national monitoring of learning achievement and the national assessment on learning achievement in education into a single national framework.

The exercise will assess learners in basic three, five and nine, as well as senior secondary school two in both public and private schools nationwide.

The training brought together principals and head teachers from the eleven participating local government education authorities, quality assurance officers, SUBEB board members, and representatives of the Federal and Benue State Ministries of Education.
