Akwa Ibom State has taken another step in its institutional reform programme as Governor Umo Eno signed fourteen Executive Bills into law. The new legislations are aimed at strengthening governance, improving public service delivery and advancing the objectives of the ARISE Agenda.
At a ceremony in the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Uyo, Governor Umo Eno said the new laws provide the legal framework to strengthen key institutions, address policy gaps and ensure continuity in programmes targeted at improving the welfare of the people.
The legislations establish several key institutions, including the Akwa Ibom State Geographical Information Service, the Senior Citizens Centre, the Hotels and Tourism Development Commission, the Ibom Broadcasting Corporation, the Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Systems Agency, and the University of Education, Afaha Nsit.
Governor Eno also signed amendments to the Hospitals Management Board Law to decentralise hospital administration and announced plans to redeploy doctors currently serving in administrative roles back to clinical duties. He said the Public Procurement Regulatory Agency and the Betting and Lottery Regulatory Agency would strengthen transparency, accountability and regulatory oversight.
The Governor further disclosed that an Environmental Sanitation Bill and additional healthcare reform bills would soon be transmitted to the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.
With the fourteen new laws now in force, the Akwa Ibom State Government says it expects stronger institutions, more efficient public services and accelerated socio-economic development across the state.
