What began as a normal Sunday worship at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inoyi-Affa, Enugu State, turned into days of fear and uncertainty for two worshippers, loved ones, and community.
Now back from captivity and speaking from their hospital beds, the rescued victims are telling the story of how they were taken and what they went through.
Emmanuel Onwudi, a 70-year-old victim, remembers the moment everything changed.
He says panic broke out during the Sunday worship when gunmen stormed the church and later forced them into a distant bush, where they spent days in harsh conditions.
For the other victim, Seminarian Lawrence Igbo, it was a painful experience.
But their ordeal eventually came to an end through a coordinated security operation.
The Enugu State Government says operatives of the DSS, Army, Police, Enugu State Forest Guards and other security agencies tracked the gang to their hideout, leading to the rescue of the victims and the arrest of these three suspects, alongside these recoveries.
The breakthrough, the government says, was also helped by the State’s growing use of technology in crime fighting.
