The Federal Government says it is strengthening Nigeria’s health system through increased domestic financing, expanded health insurance and improved access to quality primary healthcare, as part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage.

Speaking in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, said government is prioritising sustainable health financing and stronger primary healthcare systems to ensure Nigerians, particularly vulnerable populations, can access essential health services without financial hardship.

Pate said the government is also leveraging initiatives such as the Basic Health Care Provision Fund and the Group Purchasing Organisation, Medipool, to improve efficiency, strengthen medicine supply chains and deliver better value in the health sector. He stressed the need for partnerships with development and philanthropic organisations to align with Nigeria’s health priorities and strengthen, rather than create dependence on external support.

The Minister said the broader objective is to build a resilient and self-sustaining health system driven by domestic financing, local production of medicines and diagnostics, stronger health insurance and effective primary healthcare networks, assuring that government remains committed to expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Nigerians.
