Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is threatening fresh industrial action over what it describes as the haphazard implementation of the 2025 agreement reached with the Federal Government.

ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna made this known while addressing journalists at the union’s secretariat in Jos.

In a statement titled “Nigerian Universities and Nigeria Today: Our Worries, Our Propositions,” Professor Piwuna highlighted the continued withholding of salaries and other entitlements from the 2022 industrial action, as well as the delayed and partial implementation of the 2025 agreement.

He said these issues continue to undermine industrial harmony and effective academic activities in the nation’s universities.

Professor Piwuna disclosed that ASUU’s National Executive Council has given chapters in several federal and, particularly, state universities the approval to embark on varying degrees of industrial action, subject to the fulfilment of stipulated conditions.

The union also raised concerns over the broader socio-economic situation in the country, particularly insecurity, economic hardship and the increasingly tense political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

ASUU urged the Federal Government to review its social and economic policies and prioritise the welfare of Nigerians, while addressing outstanding issues affecting the university system.
