Experts are calling for greater responsibility in the communication of issues affecting national development, particularly the fight against corruption.
They say corruption does not only undermine governance and economic growth, but also weakens social values and creates development gaps that affect vulnerable communities.
The call was made at the 4th Economic Confidential Lecture and 6th National Spokespersons Recognition held in Abuja.
At a time when misinformation and disinformation are increasingly influencing public discourse, stakeholders at the 4th Economic Confidential Lecture and 6th National Spokespersons Recognition in Abuja are examining the role of effective communication in addressing some of Nigeria’s most pressing development challenges.
The rise of citizen journalism has made the creation and distribution of information easier than ever. This, they say however makes the role of professional communicators even more important, particularly in ensuring that information is properly researched, verified and presented in line with established ethical standards.
Speaking on the theme, “Anti-Corruption Reforms, Economic Stability and Effective Communication,” the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Musa Aliyu, said the fight against corruption must go beyond government institutions to build anti-corruption values in individuals, families, schools and communities.
As Nigeria continues its battle against corruption, participants here believe that responsible communication, public awareness and sustained anti-corruption campaigns can help shape a culture where citizens are confident enough to ask questions, demand transparency and hold leaders accountable.
