Stakeholders at the one-day South-West Summit of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPWD, have called for a unified national policy on disability that will provide a clear framework for addressing the challenges confronting persons living with disabilities across Nigeria.
The summit also demanded greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in the 2027 general elections
The summit, which brought together stakeholders from across the South-West and representatives of the disability community, focused on the need for stronger advocacy and coordinated action to improve the lives of persons living with disabilities.
Participants called for a national disability policy capable of providing a common standard across the 36 states of the federation, while urging JONAPWD to take the lead in championing the rights and welfare of its members.
The summit also turned attention to the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders urging the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to strengthen measures that will guarantee the full and effective participation of persons living with disabilities in the electoral process.
The summit also urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to expedite the domestication and implementation of disability legislation in the state, alongside other resolutions aimed at promoting inclusion, dignity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities
