Former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Sherriff Agbebaku has denied that he was removed from office, insisting that he voluntarily resigned.

In a statement on Tuesday in Benin City, Agbebaku noted that he tendered his resignation letter on the 17th of August, 2026, during plenary where he handed the letter to the House Majority Leader, Sunday Ojeizele. He claimed that the Majority Leader subsequently presented the letter to the Deputy Speaker, Osamwonyi Atu, who presided over the sitting.

He revealed that he also publicly announced his decision to resign on the floor of the House, adding that the proceedings were covered by television stations and other media organisations.

Agbebaku said he is therefore surprised by reports suggesting that his resignation had been converted into an impeachment.

He maintained that resignation and impeachment were two different parliamentary processes, stressing that his resignation letter clearly stated his decision to relinquish the position of Speaker with immediate effect.

The former speaker said he took the decision in the interest of peace, progress, and the development of Edo State and his Owan West Constituency.

He added that the resignation letter, plenary proceedings, video footage, and media reports remain available as evidence of what transpired.

Agbebaku further stated that he remains the elected representative of Owan West Constituency and is committed to serving his constituents while pledging continued loyalty to the All Progressives Congress and the development of Edo State.
