The Nasarawa State Government has procured heavy-duty machines under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, ACReSAL, project to strengthen efforts against flooding, erosion and land degradation in the state.
The equipment, commissioned by Governor Abdullahi Sule at the new State Secretariat Complex in Lafia, includes a grader, bulldozer, dump truck, low-bed truck, crane and amphibious swamp buggy.
Governor Sule attributed recurring floods in the state partly to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and construction on waterways. He asked residents to support government efforts to protect the environment.
He told the people that the new machines are to be used for desilting blocked waterways, dredging and land restoration, reducing the state’s reliance on expensive contractors.
Governor Sule assured residents that his administration would acquire more equipment before the end of its tenure and called for proper maintenance and responsible use of the machines.
The Governor also ordered the immediate investigation, dismissal and prosecution of health workers accused of selling hospital items, including mattresses and fans, donated to a clinic by a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
He also directed the Commissioner for Health to submit a report on the matter, which he described as a serious betrayal of public trust.
