The African Action Congress, AAC, is calling for a ₦500,000 minimum living wage for workers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, saying credible elections cannot be built on workers’ economic hardship.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said underpaid electoral officials, including university professors serving as collation officers, may be vulnerable to pressure and manipulation during elections.
The AAC argues that decent wages and improved working conditions are essential to strengthening electoral integrity and public confidence in INEC.
The party also called for electoral workers to be adequately remunerated and allowed to organise and pursue lawful industrial action.
AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has backed the demand, insisting that the welfare and rights of electoral personnel must be protected.
The party concluded with its call: “No living wage, no credible elections,” demanding the immediate implementation of a ₦500,000 minimum wage for INEC workers.
