For many Nigerian students, the journey to school comes with daily risks, as deteriorating road conditions expose them to travel difficulties, delays and safety concerns that could disrupt their academic activities.
To address these challenges, the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has commenced the South-West phase of its nationwide assessment of federal road projects, focusing on highways linking major tertiary institutions across the region.
For students who depend on these highways to get to school and return home, the condition of the roads goes beyond convenience.
It is a matter of safety, time and access to education.
Against this backdrop, the NANS President, Babatunde Akinteye, led a delegation on an inspection of the Ilesa-Akure-Benin Road and the Ondo-Ore Highway, both of which are currently under construction.
The roads serve as major transportation routes for students attending the Federal University of Technology, Akure; Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo; University of Benin and Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo.
Akinteye described the roads as critical to the student community, expressing hope that their timely completion would ease the difficulties faced by students and other commuters.
The NANS President expressed optimism that the road when completed would meet acceptable quality standards and provide safer, more reliable journeys for students and other users.
