Teachers are known to help students acquire knowledge, skills, values, and competencies.
As the world marks 2026 Teachers’ Day, the organisation of professional educators in Nigeria has celebrated teachers’ roles beyond the classroom.
The celebration was held to mark World Teachers’ Day, observed annually on the 5th of October, with the theme — Beyond the Classroom.
Members of the Organisation of Professional Educators in Nigeria said the day was set aside to recognize the sacrifices of teachers and their contribution to national development.
They noted that teaching goes beyond imparting knowledge in the classroom to shaping character, values, and the future of the nation.
Speakers decried the challenges confronting teachers in Nigeria, including poor remuneration, lack of recognition, and inadequate support, despite their critical role.
They noted that despite the odds, teachers have remained committed to nurturing the next generation.
The organisation said that beyond celebration, there is a need for improved welfare, professional development, and greater respect for teachers.
It added that investing in teachers remains one of the surest ways to secure Nigeria’s future.
