30 years after the shocking death of hip-hop legend, Tupac Shakur, one of the most notorious murder cases in music history has reached a major turning point, with a former gang leader sentenced to decades behind bars for orchestrating the rapper’s killing.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a 63-year-old former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, was sentenced to live in prison for 40 years on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, for his role in the 1996 drive-by shooting that claimed Tupac’s life.
The sentencing comes after Davis was convicted of first-degree murder in August 2026, bringing a significant development in a case that remained unsolved for decades and continued to fuel speculation among hip-hop fans worldwide.
Prosecutors argued that the killing was motivated by revenge following a physical altercation involving Davis’s nephew and members of Tupac’s entourage at a Las Vegas casino on September 7, 1996.
Hours after the confrontation, Tupac was riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder, Marion “Suge” Knight when a white Cadillac pulled alongside their vehicle and opened fire.
Tupac was shot multiple times and died in hospital six days later at just 25 years old. Knight survived the attack.
Investigators struggled for years to secure a conviction, but Davis’s public statements, media interviews and 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, became central to the prosecution’s case.
Although Davis was accused of orchestrating the attack, prosecutors did not establish conclusively who fired the fatal shots. The three other men alleged to have been in the Cadillac that night have since died.
During Tuesday’s sentencing, Tupac’s younger sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, spoke about the devastating loss her family has endured and the future her brother never got to experience.
The presiding judge, Carli Kierny, made it clear that Davis could not escape responsibility for taking a life and leaving a family to live with the consequences.
Davis’s defence team has indicated plans to appeal the conviction.
Tupac Shakur remains one of hip-hop’s most influential figures, remembered for his powerful lyrics, outspoken social commentary and enduring impact on music and popular culture.
And while this sentence marks a major milestone in the long-running case, questions surrounding the circumstances of his death continue to attract public attention nearly three decades later.
