The Nigeria Immigration Service in Niger State has confirmed that suspected terrorists operating in the forest area of Borgu Local Government Area have killed one of its personnel, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I, Ibrahim Babagiwa and injured another.
Spokesperson for the Command, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration, Muhammed Abubakar, while confirming the incident in a statement, added that the deceased officer was burnt after he was killed.
According to the Command, the duo were carrying out official duties with another officer when they came under attack in Woko village, Borgu Local Government Area on October 6, along the Tungan Taya-Woko axis, where the officers were conducting a surveillance operation.
During the assault, Babagiwa lost his life, while his colleague, an Inspector of Immigration, sustained machete injuries.
Despite his wounds, the surviving officer managed to escape from the attackers and sought help.
Abubakar said the full extent of the tragedy only became clear two days later, when Babagiwa’s remains were discovered in a burnt state.
The deceased officer was subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites, while the injured officer is now stable and responding to treatment.
The Command reaffirmed that despite the loss of one of its personnel, it is committed to tackling irregular migration and addressing other security threats along Nigeria’s international borders.
The attack highlights the dangers confronting security personnel operating in vulnerable border communities, where surveillance duties can expose officers to violent encounters with armed groups.
