Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, has called on the Igbo people to become more politically conscious and actively participate in elections.
He emphasised that community influence can only translate into meaningful development when applied to decisions that shape governance.
Okonkwo made the call at the 10th anniversary celebration of De Pinnacle International Social Club in Abuja, at the weekend under the theme, “A Decade of Excellence and Impact.”
He was also installed as the club’s patron at the event.
He observed that individuals and groups in the South-East often invest considerable energy in determining town union leadership and traditional institutions but pay less attention to elections involving governors, local government chairmen and other political office holders.
According to him, political offices at these levels have a far-reaching impact on the collective future of communities, making it necessary for the Igbo to demonstrate the same commitment to electoral participation as they do in selecting their traditional and community leaders.
He clarified that his appeal was not for social clubs to become partisan but to promote responsible civic engagement by scrutinising candidates’ records, engaging them on issues affecting their communities and encouraging informed voting.
The airline executive maintained that concern for community welfare should extend beyond philanthropy and social fellowship to include a deliberate interest in the quality, competence and character of elected leaders.
Okonkwo also urged the Igbo to look beyond state boundaries, noting that Igbo communities in Rivers, Delta and Cross River States possess valuable experiences, networks and resources that could contribute to stronger regional cohesion.
Accepting his appointment as patron, he challenged De Pinnacle International Social Club to make its second decade more impactful through stronger fellowship, expanded partnerships and greater commitment to community service.
He noted that Nigeria’s progress depended not only on government institutions and large corporations but also on the collective contributions of individuals, relationships and voluntary associations across the country.
Okonkwo pledged to support the club in translating its social influence and fellowship into greater service to the people and society, while congratulating its members on ten years of achievements.
