The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has urged Nigerians to adopt preventive safety measures at home, in schools, and in communities to reduce disaster risks and minimise their impact on lives and property.
Simple measures such as maintaining surroundings, ensuring drainage channels are evacuated, preparing for emergencies and responding promptly to early warnings are essential steps toward preventing disasters and reducing their effects.
The theme of the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, IDDRR is “Resilience Starts at Home,” and the NEMA Minna Operations Office organised a series of activities to mark the day.
Head of the Minna Operations Office, Hussaini Isah, said disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility that requires proactive efforts by individuals, families, government agencies and other stakeholders to build safer and more resilient communities.

According to him, while government agencies provide early warnings, public education, coordination and emergency response, individuals and households must also take practical steps to protect their lives and property.
Chief Disaster Risk Reduction Officer, Zainab Ndanusa, said the theme was particularly relevant to students, noting that their understanding of disaster risks and emergency response could help promote safety in their homes, schools and communities.
As part of activities to commemorate the day, a debate competition was organised for some selected schools within Minna Metropolis, climaxing with a five-kilometre road walk from the FRSC office in Tunga through the major roads down to the Bahago Junction, aimed at creating public awareness and action towards preventing disasters, reducing vulnerabilities and strengthening community resilience.
