An Enugu State High Court sitting in Nsukka will on April 7, 2022 rule on an application for interim injunction filed by the Ajuona Obukpa community, seeking to restrain the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a property developer, from further construction work at a hostel project, which the host community claim is causing environmental hazards to the people.

Presiding Justice Mathew Eluka fixed the date after listening to submissions by Counsel for the Plaintiff, Chrisient Odo and the Counsel for the Defendants, O. J. Uchenna.

The suit filed by Nnaemeka Aleke on behalf of Ajuona Obukpa community wants the court to stop the University authorities and a private developer from the further development of an 11,900-room hostel, over alleged environmental degradation being caused by the work in Obukpa community.

The University’s host community is claiming that the construction work on the hostel project is causing heavy flooding, wrecking havoc on lands and properties of the people, thereby constituting a big threat to the continued existence of their ancestral homes.

The counsels for both parties in the dispute spoke to AIT on the matter.

The traditional ruler of Obukpa community, His Majesty, Eze-Agu John Ugwuidenyi, and others who were present in Court to observe the proceedings said they long for justice.

No official of the University of Nigeria, UNN could be reached for comments as their representatives in court quickly left the premises.
