More than 1,000 members of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Osun State, South-West Nigeria have defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP following what appears to be an unending rift in the state chapter of the ruling party.

Some political strategists believe this gale of defections if not quickly checked may jeopardize the reelection of incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola in the July 16 governorship election in Osun State.

The newly defected APC members were led by a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kolapo Alimi who is currently the legislative aide to Speaker of the House of Representatives. He said the defection became imperative due to the crisis in the party in Osun state.

While reacting to the defection of the agrieved members, the State APC Director of Publicity and Strategy, Kunle Oyatomi said Alimi and his followers remain inconsequential, insisting that the incumbent Governor will win the forth coming governorship election.

Some political watchers , are however of the view that the latest defections in APC remain a great threat to the party in July polls.
