Katsina State Assembly gives account of bills passed, beats chest on Child Right Act

The Katsina State House of Assembly says it passed 273 bills from 1999 to date, with the current 7th assembly, passing 130 of the bills alone.

Deputy Speaker, Dalhatu Tafoki, who disclosed this at a 2-day round table in Kano was responding to the High Level Women Advocate,HILWA, on the request for a bill to provide 35 per cent of positions for women participation on decision making in the education sector.

The meeting was organized by the United Nations Children’s Fund,UNICEF, High Level Women Advocate,HILWA, in collaboration with the Katsina State and Federal governments, and funded by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office,FCDO.

According to Tafoki, most of the bills passed were on education, health and  justice adding that the Child Rights Act was in the assembly for 16 years, saying only the seventh assembly had the political will to pass it. 

The Deputy Speaker said the Child Right Act which has already been signed into law by Governor Aminu Masari and awaiting implementation by the executive arm of the government had some amendments which suit the religion and culture of the people of the state.
