As communities in Nigeria’s South East celebrate the New Yam festival, traditional leaders in Abia State have called on the Federal Government to support local farmers in the country.
Some of the traditional leaders who spoke during the New Yam festival by the Ibeku people, in capital, Umuahia called on government to shift attention on local farmers who they said can greatly boost the Nigeria’s economy.

The Opara Ukwu Ibeku, Benjamin Apugo and other speakers at the event called for innovations in agriculture and food consumption to further support government’s efforts to boost production.
In Igboland, the yam is regarded as a miraculous plant that signifies fertility and hugely celebrated yearly in elaborate ceremony popularly known as the New Yam festival.
