A passenger train from Warri to Itakpe reportedly derailed off its track on Sunday in Kogi forest, forcing many of the passengers to abandon the train for fear of kidnapping.

Our correspondent learnt that some criminals may have cut the rail line in the forest which led to the derailment of the train.

The report which is yet to be independently confirmed indicates that about 300 to 400 passengers of the derailed train were left stranded in the forest.

It was also gathered that the train  left Warri early Sunday morning but got derailed at about 12:noon inside the thick forest between Ajaokuta and Itakpe.

A former Chairman of the Bayelsa Vigilante Agency, Prince Douye Koroye, who was in the VIP  said it might be a case of suspected terrorists cutting the rail line, a situation that may have culminated in the train derailng because it was on a high speed.

The source, who was also former Special Adviser to the Bayelsa State Government on Youth and Community Development, revealed that four coaches and the head coach of the train were badly damaged.

He said the stranded passengers were told by the officials of the Nigeria Railway Corporation to remain calm and sit back in the train while they mobilised for help.

The Itakpe station manager who spoke to our correspondent at the time of filing this report said he was on his way to the place where the incident happened and would provide details as soon as he gets there.
