The National Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Edo State Governorship election, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the Nigeria Police, and other relevant stakeholders to prevail on the state Governor Godwin Obaseki to allow the rule of law and a level democratic playing field to hold supreme before, during and after the state governorship election slated for September nineteen.
The APC Council made this appeal while briefing reporters in Benin City, the state’s capital, on Sunday, as it accused Governor Obaseki of sponsoring thugs who attacked members of the APC and their supporters at the Oba of Benin palace gate on Saturday.
It will be recalled that several persons sustained various degree of injuries on Saturday following gunshots as a result of the free for all clash between the supporters of the PDP and APC at the gate of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.

The incident started when a group on a solidarity march for captain Hosa Okunbor to the palace of the Oba, met another group loyal to the PDP and the incumbent governor, Godwin Obaseki, who incidentally was at the palace to inform the Benin monarch of his planned flag-off campaign at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin city.
As expected, both groups began chatting anti party’s songs and confronting each other. It took the intervention of the men of the Nigeria police to bring the tense atmosphere under control.
