An Army Court-martial sitting at the Maimalari military cantonment in Maiduguri, Borno State has sentenced a soldier, Corporal Aliyu Yakubu, to five years imprisonment, for raping a thirteen-year-old girl.
In addition, Corporal Yakubu, who is of the 202 Tank Battalion in Bama, has also been dismissed from the service.
The soldier is among the troops fighting Boko Haram terrorism, under Operation Lafiya Dole, in North-East Nigeria.
The convicted soldier, who has served the Army for eleven years, was found guilty of a two count charge of defilement and assault of a thirteen year old girl in Bama on July 1st in 2018.

The President of the Court-martial, Brigadier-General Arikpo Ekubi, consequently convicted the accused, in a judgment delivered at the Maimalari military cantonment, in Maiduguri.
The sentences are however subject to confirmation, by the confirming authority, as provided by the Armed Forces Act.
