Customs impounds illegal goods worth N1.2bn in two months

The Coordinator of the Joint Borders Operations covering Kwara, Niger, Kogi, and Benue states, Garba Mohammed, told journalists in Ilorin that raids on two warehouses at Abyawo and Ita-Merin areas of the Kwara State Capital, Ilorin, saw to the seizure of 674 bags of imported rice.

He said another 140 bags of foreign rice were carefully concealed under the sharp sand in a lorry.

Mohammed, however, expressed concern on how some die-hard smugglers now use tricycles also known as Keke Napep for smuggling purposes.

Other items seized include 78 motorcycles and one Keke Napep, 310 jerrycans of vegetable oil, one locally made pistol, 944 drums of diesel, 3,676 Jerrycans of petrol products of 25 litres each, and others with total duty paid value of 1,207, 223, 380.00 Naira.

The senior customs officer said three suspects are in custody.
