Covid - 19

A professor of Physiology with a focus on Neuro Sciences at the University of Ilorin, Professor Bamidele Owoyele has recommended pineapple skin for effective management of covid-19 patients in the country.

He made the recommendation based on the research he recently conducted showing the potency of a substance in pineapples that inhibits the inflammation problems caused by the Covid-19.

Professor Owoyele a researcher who is also the head of the department of Physiology, University of Ilorin maintained that bromelain found in varying quantities in the pineapple fruit skin and stems are very good in helping to stop inflammation and pain in form of wound and internal swelling as covid-19 has a way of causing inflammation within human system.

Though professor Owoyele is yet to do any clinical studies on his discovery but had done basic studies using lower animals to prove his point with the assurance that the bromelain in pineapples can improve the human immune system which can help to fight many diseases.

He, however, called on government at all levels to fund research in various research institutes in the country for effective performance and discovery of new scientifically proven solutions to health challenges confronting humanity.

One of the lessons to be learnt from covid-19 pandemic by Nigerian government is the fact that there must be massive and timely investment in the research and health sector to truly care for the citizenry.
