As part of efforts to halt increased cases of domestic violence, the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has inaugurated the state’s Gender Response Initiative Team, GRIT.
The inauguration took place at the government house, Yenagoa with Governor Diri charging the 18-member committee to harmonize with other relevant agencies to tackle the menace holistically as there are also cases of men being victims of abuse.

Bayelsa state joined the comity of States that have domesticated the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, Act of March 10, 2021.
To ensure full implementation of the law, the Bayelsa state Gender Response Initiative Team GRIT is being set up by Governor Douye Diri.
The Governor believes the committee’s capacity to nip in the bud issues of violence against the vulnerable due to the track record of the members.
Chairman of the committee who was one time chairman of FIDA Bayelsa chapter, Dise Ogbise, expressed the commitment to discharge their mandate in line with the provisions of the state’s VAPP Law, 2021.
With the committee made up of professionals including, medical personnel, lawyers and law enforcement agents, the expectations of halting the societal menace particularly, prosecution of offenders of human rights is high.
