Over prescription of antibiotics, non-completion of the entire antibiotic course, and over use of antibiotic in livestock and fish farming have been identified as factors responsible for antibiotics resistance.
A professor of medical microbiology, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex,OAUTHC, Ile -Ife, Professor Aaron Aboderin disclosed this at a lecture to mark the World Anti biotics Awareness Week in Osogbo, the Osun state capital.
The theme for this year’s anti biotics awareness week is “Stewards for the Future.”
In his lecture, professor Aboderin says abuse of antibiotics is the major reason why most antibiotics drugs could not fight micro organisms.
Other factors mentioned at the symposium are the challenge of over the counter drugs, lack of proper information on the usage of antibiotics and poverty.
To avoid this resistance, Prof. Aboderin advised that antibiotics that is only effective against the specific type of bacteria should be used and strict adherence to doctor’s description should be observed.
The World Antibiotic Awareness Week aims to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers, and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of more anti biotics resistance.
