Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike says the decision to establish the real Madrid football academy in Port Harcourt was informed by the need to provide a platform that will help groom young talents in the state and country to become future global stars of the round leather game.
The governor stated this Thursday after he inspected construction work on classrooms and hostels at the academy.

Apart from developing the young talents with the skills and discipline they require to be great professionals during their careers, one thing the governor is keen on, is giving them the best education; which may also become helpful later in life or when they chose not to pursue a career in football.
Regarded as one of his pet projects, governor Wike who was happy with the pace of work says he hopes to set a very high standard for the Real Madrid academy under his watch.
The Real Madrid academy port harcourt is expected to commence full operations this year.
Already about 2,000 applications have been received from prospective students hoping to gain admission into the academy.
