In a bid to ensure full compliance with the directive given to all markets close down as part of measures taken to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus in Rivers State, the State Governor, Nyesom Wike, accompanied by service commanders in the state on Saturday, monitored to see if the markets had fully complied with the order.
Governor Wike had on Thursday, March 26, in a statewide address, announced the decision, saying that the action became necessary in order to safeguard the lives of the people from the rampaging disease.

Bearing in mind that the virus is transmittable, Governor Wike said his administration’s decision was chiefly informed by the fact that the disease can easily be spread from the markets.
The markets monitored include those along the popular Ikwerre Road, Rumuokuta Market, Rumuomasi Market, and slaughter.
Others are Elekahia Market and the Creek Road Market at the old Port Harcourt Township.

As the Governor discovered, the traders had fully complied with the directive to shutdown.
But the question on many lips is how long will the markets remain closed?
Governor Wike is, therefore, calling for collective support of all to keep Rivers State safe from the rampaging Coronavirus.
He also wants people to continue to practice hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and social distancing.
