Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Okey Onyekanma , has resigned his position.

His letter of resignation was delivered by the Speaker, Chiji Collins during plenary session.

Onyekanma also resigned as the Chairman, Assembly Committee on Rules and Business.

In the letter, Onyekanma says his resignation is due to the zoning arrangement in the State which cedes the position of Deputy Speaker to the lawmaker from the same zone with the Governor.

With the new leadership in the State, Onyekanma says he is not from the same zone with the Governor, Hope Uzodinma.

Meanwhile, 9 members of the Imo State House of Assembly who were formerly members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the Action Alliance, AA and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA have defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The lawmakers who defected are, Authur Egwim, Obinna Okwara, Johnson Duru, and Ngozi Obiefule from the AA, Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Chidiebere Ogbunikpa, Heclus Okoro and Paul Emeziem all from the PDP.

The member from APGA is Ekene Nnodimele who also resigned his position as the Minority Leader of the Assembly.

Most of the lawmakers who defected to the APC gave reasons of political crisis in their former parties for their action.
