The Premier League’s return will be memorable for many, but it was an evening to forget for David Luiz. Not really what you need when your contract is about to expire.
The Brazilian defender, 33, did not start or finish the game but accepted responsibility for Arsenal’s defeat after coming off the bench to produce an error-strewn performance, which ended with him being sent off for giving away a penalty.
“It’s my fault,” he said. “The team did well, especially with 10 men. The coach is amazing, all the players are amazing, it was my fault.”
Luiz also said he should have decided on his contract situation in the last two months. He is out of contract at the end of the month and said he still hopes to play for the club again.
“I want to be here,” he said. “The coach knows. He wants me to stay.”

Boss Mikel Arteta said: “He is someone that is very honest and straight forward. My opinion of David Luiz hasn’t changed. It won’t change because he had a difficult performance tonight.”
