Following the presidential pardon and clemency granted inmates in the country, the Nasarawa State Government is also to pardon 125 inmates across the correctional centres in the State.
In a statement, Governor Abdullahi Sule said the aim is to contain the spread of Coronavirus and the need to urgently decongest the correctional centres.
The inmates are in the following categories:
a. Convicts with fine of N50,000.00 and below;
b. Convicts with minor offences;
c. On the grounds of old age (above 60 years);
d. Those who have served 75% of their sentences; and
e. Convicts with less than 6 months to complete their sentences.
Sule said in the light of the directives, a total of 125 inmates are to benefit from the Nasarawa State Correctional Centres across the State.
Accordingly, the Governor has directed the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy to map out modalities for the immediate release of the affected inmates across the correctional centres.
