The Nigerian government has sent condolences to the government and people of Italy over the death of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, who was killed during an attack on a UN convoy there on Monday.
Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama in a tweet condemned the attack.
Luca Attanasio was the first counselor at the Italian embassy in Nigeria in 2015 from where he was posted to the DRC.
The 43-year-old envoy died in hospital on Monday from injuries sustained after the United Nations convoy he was travelling in came under fire near Goma, in the east of the country.

The convoy reportedly belonged to the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP).
An Italian military police officer traveling with the envoy and a Congolese driver were also killed.
